Roman Villarreal is a self-taught artist who captures the spirit of his South Chicago community in his art, reflecting the people, places and life experiences of his neighborhood. Villarreal’s Southeast Side community is an often overlooked, negatively stigmatized neighborhood of Chicago. On November 12, Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art airs SOUTHEAST: a city within a city, a documentary demonstrating how Southeast Chicago, once a beautiful and flourishing community, has been impacted by deindustrialization and disinvestment. Following the screening, Villarreal, who is featured in the film, is joined in conversation by filmmaker Steven J. Walsh.

The film screening is presented in conjunction with Intuit’s exhibition Roman Villarreal: South Chicago Legacies. The artist’s first major retrospective, the exhibition features works from the 1970s to the present day.
