Widely recognized as the founder of American landscape architecture, Frederick Law Olmsted (1822–1903) was the pre-eminent creator of the nation’s parks and greenspaces. In Chicago, Olmsted is known for his visionary designs for Jackson and Washington Parks and the Midway Plaisance, his redesign of Jackson Park for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, and the transformation of the site back into parkland after the fair. While these greenspaces have been enjoyed by generations, their preservation has and continues to present a diverse set of challenges.

In celebration of Olmsted’s 200th birthday, join park historian Julia Bachrach, photographer and past Washington Park Camera Club president Duane Savage, and landscape designer and preservationist Patricia O’Donnell for a conversation about the past, present, and future of Chicago’s Olmsted parks.
