Raymond “Ray” Kakuo Yoshida (1930–2009) was an influential artist and beloved teacher who taught for more than 40 years at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. As an extension of his creative life, Yoshida voraciously acquired a spectacular range of objects from folk and popular culture, artworks by friends and former students, and works by notable non-mainstream artists, which he artfully arranged throughout his Chicago home.

This program will consider Yoshida’s collection and its impact in Chicago, the enthusiastic responses it elicited, and its new, permanent home at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center’s Art Preserve. Participants include educator Lisa Stone; Pentimenti Productions’ Harrison Sherrod and Leslie Buchbinder; Art Preserve curator Laura Bickford––who will give a virtual tour of the Yoshida installation; and Yoshida’s friend, artist Frank Trankina—whose work, collected by Yoshida, is in the Art Preserve.
